International Women's day
On Friday 8th March, the school celebrated International Women's Day. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and the ongoing journey to create a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
This year's theme, "Empowerment and Equality," encapsulates the essence of what International Women's Day stands for. It is a day to honour the achievements of women globally, recognise their contributions to society, and advocate for gender parity in all aspects of life.
At AVA, we are committed to fostering an environment where every student, regardless of gender, feels valued, supported, and empowered to pursue their dreams and aspirations. We believe in providing equal opportunities for all, and International Women's Day serves as an opportunity to reinforce this commitment.
Throughout the week leading up to International Women's Day, we have been offering students the chance to communicate which female inspires them. It has been wonderful to read their comments. On Wednesday we were honoured to have Sigourney Bonner in to talk to year 9 and 10 girls. Sigourney is a Forbes 30 under 30 and, as well as being a researcher for Cancer Research UK at Cambridge University on rare brain cancers in children, is the founder of Black In Cancer, an award-winning initiative to engage more bright young minorities in cancer research.
Sigourney spoke about her career and how she overcame difficult circumstances growing up on a council estate and working hard to change her life.
As a school we have celebrated the achievements of women past, present, and future, and work towards a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of gender.
